The design breaks down the institution into a series of object-to-object relationships. The fire station is re-envisioned as an accumulation of stuff across a range of scales: protective gear, firetrucks, and the architecture are treated equally. This approach directly informs the building’s massing and composition: gaps between vaguely familiar forms grant access to the institution and activate the public imagination. The reflective surfaces of these giant objects map the surroundings onto their exteriors as both a gesture towards the neighborhood but also a way of hiding in plain sight.
